Impact of Trade and Globalisation on Gender in India: A Case Study of Women Workers in the Fisheries Sector
New Delhi, 1 December 2008
Inclusion of gender in trade-related research or policy formulation is a recent phenomenon. Differential impact of trade liberalisation across gender as well as varying sectoral sensitivities to trade liberalisation are difficult to assess, given the lack of gender-segregated data and statistics especially related to imports and exports. The purpose of the present study is to look at the correlation between the performance of fisheries industry, particularly the export component, and its impact on the women labourers engaged in the fish processing industry.

Impact of Trade and Globalization on Women Workers in the Handicraft Sector: Evidence from the Carpet and Embroidery Sectors
New Delhi, 1 December 2008
A great body of literature exists that tracks impact of globalization on women’s employment and empowerment. The current study falls within the same group, albeit with a difference. The study is situated within an analytical framework that is uniquely suited to the conditions prevailing in the handicrafts sector of India (particularly in Uttar Pradesh) where poor women weavers are engaged in an almost stagnant production structure. Trade openness is, however, ushering in gradual transformation that has the potential to empower those living below the poverty line, through literacy and productivity gains on a sustainable basis.
